UGG is launching a plant-based shoe range made from renewable sugarcane.
The Plant Power collection consists of three iconic footwear styles featuring carbon-neutral materials. Prices start from $120.
UGG’ plant-based shoe range
The Fluff Sugar Platform and Fluff Sugar Sandal shoes feature a fluffy material made from TENCEL Lyocell that is responsibly harvested trees. The soles are also made out of sugarcane: a rainwater-dependent resource that removes CO2 from the atmosphere and doesn’t require irrigation.
The new Chukka boots are also lined with TENCEL Lyocell. Moreover, the soles are made of LACTAE HEVEA: latex harvested from the Hevea rubber tree.
The upper is also woven from an environmentally-preferred blend of 55 percent cotton and 45 percent hemp.
‘Combat climate change’
Andrea O’Donnell is the president of UGG and Koolaburra – owned by Deckers Brands. She said: “We’re committed to doing our part to combat climate change.
“Our design team took inspiration from our iconic styles and created new silhouettes with carbon-neutral, plant-based materials.”
O’Donnell then concluded: “The resulting Plant Power Collection tells a story about what is possible and it’s an exciting step in on our journey towards a more sustainable future.”
‘Innovative materials’
UGG says it is also committed to making its products ‘better for both consumers and the planet’. It says it will achieve this by ‘seeking and using innovative materials’.
The brand has also announced targets to increase its use of recycled, repurposed, regenerated (plant-based), renewable (bio-based), and certified fibers by 35 percent by 2027.
Despite being labeled as a plant-based range, it has not been confirmed whether the shoes are vegan-frriendly.
