Matthew Kenney, a renowned plant-based celebrity chef, has opened a vegan drive-thru in Rhode Island.

The restaurant, Plant City X, serves fast-food classics from burgers to milkshakes and mac n’ cheese. Most of the menu is also available gluten-free.

Plant-based drive-thru

Items on Plant City X’s menu include three different types of vegan Mac & Cheese, from Buffalo to Truffle, as well as bean burgers. It also serves ‘Chik’ Nuggets with different vegan sauces such as Blue Cheese, Chipotle Mayo, Cilantro Mayo, Buffalo, and BBQ.

The vegan cheese is made from cashews, and other menu items include plant-based bacon made from shiitake mushrooms.

Its offerings are also available for delivery within a five-mile radius. Moreover, the business uses completely compostable materials to ensure it is as sustainable as possible.

Plant City X has been a hit with customers so far

Matthew Kenney’s plant-based journey

Kenney owns almost 30 plant-based restaurants around the world and believes the diet is ‘the way of the future’. Serving plant-based food to the mainstream is a ‘gamechanger‘ for the movement, Kenney has said in the past.

He opened the Plant City X site with entrepreneur Kim Anderson. It lies inside the pair’s vegan food hall, Plant City.

Anderson told VegNews: “What we kept hearing from our customers is, ‘You have to open a Plant City near us.’…So when we started thinking about a drive-thru concept and saw this great building in Middletown that had been empty for more than a year and a half, we had a good feeling about it.”

Expansion

Kenney and Anderson have already set their sights on more drive-thru ideas across New England, US.

In addition, Kenney is launching a new vegan restaurant in Brooklyn, New York, over the next few months. They will add to the seven he has already opened since the start of the pandemic.

He says he expects ‘unlimited growth’ on the expansion of Plant City X, according to VegNews.
