Eliminating meat, dairy, and eggs from your diet can do wonders for your quality of life.
While there are some obvious benefits – general health, for example, or a clearer conscience – there are some unexpected side effects too.
Here are five unexpected ways being vegan could seriously improve your life.
1.You may smell better
Individuals who eat a diet of mainly fruit and vegetables have been shown to smell better.
A study analyzed the sweat of men who eat these healthy foods in abundance, and concluded that women found them more attractive.
The sweat produced by men eating lots of veggies was described as ‘floral, fruity, sweet, or having medicinal qualities.’
What better reason to go vegan?
2. Your skin might improve
Animal-based foods can have a detrimental effect on the skin.
Meat, dairy, and eggs are high in inflammatory compounds and AGEs (Advanced Glycation End-Products) that cause skin-ageing by glycation; animal foods are also lacking in skin-beautifying antioxidants, phytochemicals, and vitamin C that can be found in plants.
In addition, vegans tend to eat more fruits and vegetables than meat-eaters, which improve some skin-related issues.
High in essential vitamins and antioxidants, fruits and vegetables ‘can rejuvenate the skin, give a healthy glow, and heal certain skin conditions’, according to beauty expert Star Khechara.
She explains: “Compounds, known as ‘nutricosmetics’, such as Resveratrol, Ellagic acid, and Beta-Glucan are only found in plants: red grapes, raspberries, and oats, respectively.”
3. You will last longer – and I’m not talking about life span
Indeed, vegans are more virile.
Ditching meat and dairy products from your diet is a great way to lower your cholesterol and blood pressure – and it will also ‘help get your equipment back in working condition’, according to PETA.
“The consumption of animal products has long been linked to artery blockages that cause inadequate functioning of not only a man’s heart but also all his other vital organs,” argues PETA director Mimi Bekhechi.
“While foods high in fibre, including fruits, vegetables and whole grains, scrub the plaque off the arterial walls and get blood flowing to the parts he [a man] needs it flowing to, improving his love life and bringing satisfaction to someone else.”
Men who combine a regular workout routine with a fruit-rich diet of strawberries, blueberries, and apples can also reduce their risk of developing erectile dysfunction by a staggering 20 percent, one study found.
4. Better poop
There, I said it. A healthy diet is abundant in fiber, which means less straining and better-formed stools.
Plant-based eaters have increased bowel movements – which makes life much easier.
And that’s not all: women eating vegetarian and vegan may have lower breast cancer rates, because they have larger bowel movements.
So truth be told, knowing your poop means knowing your health, in most cases.
Let’s not forget that vegan poop can literally save lives. Vegans can donate their stools (and be paid for it) for a medical treatment called fecal microbiota transplant used for patients suffering from inflammatory colon diseases like C. difficile and Crohn’s disease.
5. Fewer UTIs
Eating meat has been associated with urinary tract infections [UTIs] – and women consuming chicken can put themselves at greater risk of these infections.
The best way to prevent bladder infections may be to avoid chicken, according to top physician Dr. Michael Greger. He also found that a vegan and a vegetarian diet will help clear Proteus and associated antibodies.
