It all kicked off on Twitter recently when animal rights charity PETA made a post asking users to present their best arguments for eating bacon. Publication Lad Bible turned the thread into an article, picking their favourite arguments for eating bacon.
Here are our top 5 reasons to leave the stuff alone.
1. Processed meat is carcinogenic
Bacon (alongside other processed meats) has been ranked as a level one carcinogen since 2015 by the World Health Organisation alongside tobacco and asbestos
2. Repeated undercover footage shows poor conditions at pig farms
In fact, footage released this week (and described as showing a ‘vision of hell’) depicts just some of the suffering pigs go through in order to sate the public’s seemingly unending hunger for bacon.
3. Overuse of antibiotics in animal agriculture is leading us to a post antibiotic world
What does post-antibiotic World mean? It means the illnesses we treat with antibiotics now, will simply be resistant to the medication. What may seem like a minor disease could soon be one that could kill us.
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO): “Antibiotic resistance is one of the biggest threats to global health, food security, and development today. It is the most urgent of the drug-resistant trends.”
4. Pigs are more intelligent than dogs and chimpanzees
They are widely considered to be the cleverest ‘domestic’ animals we know.
During an experiment back in the 90s, pigs were trained to move a cursor on a video screen with their snouts. They had to use the cursor to distinguish between new images and ones they had already seen. They mastered this as quickly as chimpanzees. The study has been cited in academic papers along with numerous other tests showing their high IQ.

5. Living near pig farms poses a risk to human health
Research carried out in the Netherlands, Germany and the US has raised concerns about the negative impact living near pig farms can have on human health.
A 2015 study by Texas Tech researchers found that people in the vicinity of factory farms breathe in harmful and unpleasant substances – these include ammonia, antibiotic resistant bacteria, and microscopic faeces particles.
