It’s becoming easier and easier to find tasty vegan meals at a whole range of high street restaurants – but which are the best?

Charity Veganuary, which encourages people to try veganism for the month of January – launched the Great Big Vegan Food Survey in May this year, and 6,500 of its participants and supporters responded.

Read on to find out the best high street chains…

1. Zizzi

With a separate vegan menu, there are plenty of plant-based options available at this Italian-style eatery, including pizza with vegan cheese, pasta, salads and loads of sides.

Oh, and they’ve just added a new ‘vegan dessert calzone’, described as ‘warm sugared
dough filled with banana, caramelised pecans and blueberries, served with coconut & chocolate ripple
gelato’.

2. Pizza Express

As another pizza chain to add vegan mozzarella to its menu, Pizza Express has clinched a coveted spot on the list, with its three-course vegan meal.

Plant-based eaters can plump for vegan dough balls to start, pizza with a range of tasty veggie toppings, and coconut ice-cream dessert to finish.

3. Wagamama

There are a number of vegan-friendly dishes on the menu at Wagamamas. Try the yasai gyoza (veggie dumplings), the wok fried greens with soy sauce, or the delicious yasai itame – rice noodles in a coconut and lemongrass soup.

Other options include the warm tofu salad or yasai ramen on udon noodles. The pad Thai can be made vegan if you ask your server.

4. Las Iguanas

Ask for the vegetarian menu, which has all the vegan dishes labeled. Options include various tapas, sides, and the top choice – mushroom fajitas.

5. Pret

This high street sandwich store has been experimenting widely with meat-free and vegan dishes – opening two veggie-only stores and fridges, and launching a slew of plant-based options.

If you can make it to Veggie Pret in Shoreditch or Soho, you can tuck into the vegan mac and cheese and salted caramel brownie. But there are a number of vegan sandwiches, soups and drinks available in all branches.

6. Wetherspoons

Some may be surprised to find out how vegan-friendly budget pub Wetherspoons is. It has a dedicated vegan menu, which offers breakfast, as well as meals for later in the day. There are lots of sides, as well as jacket potato, curry or pasta for mains.

7. Ask

As another Italian-style eatery that offers vegan cheese, Ask is a favorite for vegans in search of tasty pizza – as well as pasta dishes. Best of all is the pudding – try the blood orange and chocolate tart.

8. YO! Sushi

You can easily eat at YO! Sushi even if you avoid fish. Try the vegetable gyoza dumplings, firecracker rice and vegetable yaki soba. There are some suitable sides too.

9. Nando’s

While Nando’s is primarily a chicken restaurant, vegans are well-catered for with a list of meat, egg, and dairy-free choices. These include the veggie burger (without mayo), hummus, olives, salad and famous Nando’s fries among others.

10. The Handmade Burger Company

Vegans can opt for the chickpea and quinoa burger at this casual dining chain. There are a slew of suitable sides as well, including chips, corn on the cob, and onion rings.

Please check individual menus and ingredients at restaurants before eating, as they are always subject to change.
