Vegan actor Natalie Portman will be honored with a major environmental award, according to a report by Forbes.

The Academy award-winner will receive the Ongoing Commitment Award from the Environmental Media Association [EMA].

EMA Awards

The EMA Awards aims to honor those who use their voice to help promote environmental progress and innovation.

According to the organization, it ‘promotes the future of our planet’ through celebrity work, year-round programs, and annual events.

The 27th Annual EMA Awards benefit will be held on September 23 in Los Angeles. It will be hosted by vegan Jaden Smith, and presented by Toyota and Lexus.

‘Eating Animals’

Portman has been a long-time advocate of animal issues – and has spoken out about veganism on a number of occasions.

Most recently, she has produced and narrated new documentary Eating Animals, which is based on Jonathan Safran Foer’s memoirs of the same name – the book that inspired her to become a vegan activist.

The feature-length documentary focuses on the industrial farming complex, exposing the grim reality behind meat, egg, and dairy production.

‘Not alone’

Talking about the award, Portman said it reminded her she’s ‘not alone’.

She said: “It’s up to each individual to decide to educate themselves, take responsibility and make a change.

“I chose to adapt to a sustainable lifestyle after learning of the health risks and environmental effects that come with the mass production of animals.

“To receive this honor is a valuable reminder to me that I am not alone in this fight.”

Bloomberg

New York Mayor – and vegetarian – Michael Bloomberg will also pick up a gong at the award ceremony for his philanthropic work.

He will be given the Lifetime Achievement Award for raising more than $100 million for various environmental initiatives including clean energy and ocean conservation projects.

He says: “Fighting climate change is one of our greatest opportunities to save and improve lives.

“The more we raise awareness of the benefits of action, the faster we’ll make progress and I want to thank EMA and all the honorees who are helping to lead the way.”

Honorees

A number of other high profile figures will be rewarded for their contributions, including vegan Russell Simmons who will receive the Missions in Music Award.

Entrepreneur and businessman John Paul DeJoria, who founded hair care range John Paul Mitchell and tequila brand Patro?n Spirits, will pick up the Innovator Award, and Alan J. Fuerstman, Founder, Chairman, and CEO of Montage International will take home the Corporate Responsibility Award.
