Oscar-nominated actor – and outspoken vegan activist James Cromwell has spoken out about being recognized in jail.

The star, who has been arrested on multiple occasions due to his activism, made the comments in an interview with The Guardian.

Speaking about his most recent arrest, he said: “They all knew my face. ‘Hey, he’s the guy in The Green Mile!’ I was always ‘the guy’.”

SeaWorld

One of Cromwell’s 2017 arrests followed a protest at SeaWorld. The actor was later charged with trespassing after leading the protest last summer.

Wearing a shirt emblazoned with the words ‘SeaWorld Sucks’, Cromwell stood up in front of the crowd at an orca ‘show’ at the park, and spoke about SeaWorld’s mistreatment of animals.

He – along with fellow protestors – was led away in handcuffs.

Publicity

Speaking to the Mail Online after being charged and facing possible jail time, Cromwell said: “Even when we were found guilty: no publicity. But when celebrities go to jail, oh wow it’s a story suddenly.

“We can’t demonize people because of their political stance.

“We have to say ‘look, it won’t matter ultimately whether you’re Republican, radical right, or progressiv’e.

“All that will matter is that we’re able to drink the water, breathe the air, live on the land. That’s what’s threatened.”
