More than 300,000 people have signed a petition calling on the UK government to end plastic pollution.

The petition, created by Friends of the Earth, says that we throw away millions of tons of plastic every year – and that ‘vast amounts of it finds its way into the ocean’.

Plastic pollution

Friends of the Earth says: “All this plastic pollution means a cocktail of harmful chemicals can be passed up the food chain. Plastic is even getting into our food and water supplies.”

Now the organization wants the government to introduce a plan which covers several points. These include phasing out non-essential single-use plastics now, committing to tackling trickier plastics, like in clothes and car tires, as soon as possible, and maintaining quality of life for people who need plastic, and doesn’t cause worse environmental problems.

The petition says: “I want urgent government action to reduce manufacturers’ and retailers’ production of plastic waste. This is needed to protect our oceans and ensure the food and water we consume is safe and plastic-free.”
