The vast majority of people who tried veganism for January have stayed vegan, charity Veganuary has announced.
Veganuary – the charity that encourages people to try veganism in January – claims 66 percent of all respondents have remained vegan.
The campaign has seen its biggest year yet, with 60,000 committing to a plant-based diet this past January.
January 2017 saw a twenty-fold increase of supporters in four years.
73 percent of vegetarians decided to completely ditch dairy and eggs after doing the challenge, according to the campaign.
A whopping majority of the Veganuary supporters reported improved health, including better skin and digestion, and more energy.
Participant Nicolas Quentin from Berkshire, who embarked on the vegan challenge, said it was the best decision he has ever taken.
“It’s been such a change in my life, that I almost feel like my previous behaviours were in a past lifetime.
“I look at past photos and I have lost weight, look healthier and feel a lot better; not normally what people describe as they get older!” he said.
More than half of the respondents said they motivated someone else to go vegan this year.
However, many people haven’t stuck to a plant-based diet due to restaurants not catering for vegans as well as they should, says the survey.
Another Veganuary participant stated she ‘wants to shout what [she] learnt from the rooftops’.
“I am two stone lighter, and I now run three times a week as part of my vegan running club. To say it has improved several aspects of my life for the better would be an understatement!,” said Laura-Jayne Williams.
Participants said films such as Cowspiracy and Vegucated made them commit to the vegan lifestyle, according to Veganuary CEO Simon Winch.
“It’s truly heart-warming to see how many people have decided to stay vegan after taking part in Veganuary 2017.
“We are proud to have helped so many people improve their health, reduce their impact on the planet, and spare the lives of animals,” he added.
Veganuary expects 150,000 people to take part next year.
