Veganism is taking hold in a number of countries across the world – and traditionally meat-focused Switzerland has joined the list, with its new veggie and vegan store in Zurich.

Shoppers can choose from a number of products including fresh produce, basic food items, vegan and vegetarian cosmetics, freshly prepared beverages, nuts, cereals, and a range of convenience products from the Karma shop at Zug station.

According to a spokesperson for Co-op, the new shop is a response to growing customer demand, and it has been designed to improve its expertise in vegetarian retail.

Additionally, the Karma store is a breakaway from current shop formats like Coop to go, Zopf & Zöpfli and Marché Express.

A spokesperson said: “Goods include homemade products from the well-known brand Karma; vegetarian items and vegan Naturaplan and Delicorn; and fashionable brands, including a fine selection of Veganz products.

“About one third of food products are organic or certified Max Havelaar.

“Every week, a new recipe from food database Fooby is available in stores, with the ingredients stocked close by.”

The shop will also focus on reducing food waste, by offering many products including muesli and quinoa in bulk, so customers can buy the exact quantities they require.
