South African vegan group Vegilicious has joined ProVeg International in a bid to increase the scope of its advocacy.

ProVeg – which was created from VEBU [Vegetarierbund Deutschland] – has well over a century’s experience in advocating a vegan diet. It is currently expanding globally, with chapters in Germany, the UK, Spain, Poland and the Netherlands.Plant-based advocacy forms the basis of ProVeg International’s approach, whose mission is to reduce the global consumption of animals by 50 percent by the year 2040. 

ProVeg South Africa believes it will have a stronger presence in its campaigning, and a greater reach, now it is part of the larger global group.


According to ProVeg South Africa: “The vegan movement has gained a lot of momentum globally in recent years. The possibility of a societal shift towards a more sustainable, nutritious and animal-friendly dietary lifestyle is becoming increasingly realistic in many parts of the world.

“In partnering with ProVeg International, we aim to significantly increase the scope of our advocacy, and introduce larger national and international campaigns to the South African vegan movement.

“With the backing of an international organisation with a proven track record, we’ll have a stronger voice when we engage with the food industry and government. Collaboration between countries will also give us more opportunities for knowledge-sharing, and we’ll be able to expand successful campaigns across a larger area.”
