International chain Rainforest Cafe has been slammed for selling beef as the Amazon continues to burn.
The eatery, which also offers educational tours on the Amazon, states it ‘strives to help educate the public and area schools about the world’s rainforests, threatened and endangered species, and conservation efforts to protect the planet’s fragile ecosystems’.
But an online petition urging the company to stop selling beef has exceeded 1,000 signatures – as the fires have been linked to cattle farming by a slew of major news outlets.
‘Completely illogical’
“Despite its theme and apparent conservation efforts, [Rainforest Cafe] serve beef products on its menu which is completely illogical. With the rainforest currently burning at an alarming rate as a result of the demand for beef, the whole theme of the restaurant is contradicted by its menu,” the petition reads.
“Therefore, it needs to align its menu with its ethos, and that begins with removing all beef from menus – before eventually removing all animals products, as animal agriculture in general is the number one cause of climate change.”
Beef ban
Universities across the UK were also pressured to ban beef – following in the footsteps of Goldsmiths, who removed the product from all its cafes.
According to the Guardian, the new Warden of Goldsmiths, Professor Frances Corner, announced the changes stating that declaring a climate emergency ‘can not be empty words’.
“The growing global call for organizations to take seriously their responsibilities for halting climate change is impossible to ignore.
“Though I have only just arrived at Goldsmiths, it is immediately obvious that our staff and students care passionately about the future of our environment and that they are determined to help deliver the step change we need to cut our carbon footprint drastically and as quickly as possible.”
