The power of plant-based
“In 2011 I got sick – I got really ill with a condition that affected my autonomic nervous system. I couldn’t control my heart rate properly, my blood pressure, my digestive system. I had chronic headaches, I had chronic fatigue. I had so many pains, aches. I was on antibiotics for two and a half years for the secondary infections.
“I was then diagnosed with something called Mast Cell Activation Disorder where you’re basically having allergic reactions to everything you’re not allergic to, because your body thinks you’re allergic to it. It was just an absolute nightmare. I was 21, and taking steroids and all these drugs, and basically spending all my time in bed – a million miles away from where I wanted to be.
“About a year in I hit a real rock bottom with my mental health as well as my physical health and I had that honest conversation with myself for the first time since I got ill, which was ‘the drugs aren’t working, you can’t do anything, you’re miserable beyond miserable, you’ve got no motivation, excitement or joy for life. I didn’t feel like myself and if I continued on that trajectory I’d never have a job or move out of home.
“So I thought something has to change. I’d taken all the drugs that were available and for me they hadn’t worked so I thought ‘there’s got to be something else’. I went online and found people who’d used different elements of diet and lifestyle…all more successful than I’d been so far…I thought ok, I’m going to change the way I eat.”
