Vegan commuters in Canary Wharf were baffled after seeing an ‘all-vegan’ food outlet selling beef and whey powder.
Protein Haus in Reuters Place – a booth selling coffee, protein shakes, and snacks – advertises itself as the ‘first vegan cafe in the Wharf’ in a slogan painted on the side the booth. Advertising materials for the location also describe it as a ‘vegan-only cafe’.
A vegan consumer posted pictures of the booth and its non-vegan options on Facebook, saying: “Went to protein haus in Canary Wharf today….a vegan cafe that sells Whey/beef? Almost like McDonald’s calling themselves a vegan cafe because the fries are vegan.
“Really disappointing when you think that you don’t have to worry about what to order [sic].”
Another user said: “I believe their vegan cafe is the small pop up store/truck outside in the Wharf. That is fully vegan. The actual shop inside and the other branches are not vegan although they have vegan options [sic].”
A Protein Haus spokeswoman was quick to respond to Plant Based News’ request for clarification. She said: “We do certain month of vegan only. We cater for all diets so explore all diets. “We did January until March – so [won ‘t be 100 per cent vegan until] October now. We have lots of vegan food still and we have a larger shop inside the mall we massive amount of vegan options.”
