A dairy farm proposal in Idaho has been met with anger from locals who ‘don’t want a stinking dairy near the freeway’.
The farm, which will be based in Jerome County in southern Idaho, has been proposed as an ‘educational facility’ by the University of Idaho Center for Agriculture, Food and the Environment [CAFE].
Speaking about the plans, resident Judy Holland told local media: “We are all furious.”
‘Premature’
Residents have said they are concerned about potential odors from the dairy, as well as groundwater depletion and damage to roads.
But Commissioner Roger Morley said worry was premature as the university hasn’t yet bought any land for the far – or even picked a location.
He said: “There’s a lot of objecting going on about nothing.”
Million dollar project
One source has described the proposals as a farm ‘disguised as a research facility’.
The cost – which is expected to reach $45 million – will be shouldered by private industry and the university – as well as an expected $15 million funded by the state legislature.
