Hollywood superstar Leonardo DiCaprio will be playing the role of artist, scientist, and legendary vegetarian Leonardo da Vinci in an upcoming movie.
The film, which will be based on da Vinci’s life, will be produced by DiCaprio’s film company Appian Way in conjunction with Paramount Pictures, who won the rights to make the movie after a fierce bidding war seven-figure bidding war with Universal Studios.
‘Murder’
Da Vinci is widely recognized to have been a vegetarian – with some historians alleging that the artist only ate vegetables – suggesting he may even have been vegan.
Despite this, there is some argument over whether he actually said words which are widely attributed to him.
The artist is alleged to have said: “I have from an early age abjured the use of meat, and the time will come when men such as I will look upon the murder of animals as they now look upon the murder of men.”
It is more widely accepted that da Vinci said he would not let his body be a ‘tomb for other animals, an inn of the dead … a container of corruption’.
Environment
DiCaprio often talks about his passion for the environment.
In 2015, the star executive produced a new edit of documentary Cowspiracy, which was launched on streaming service Netflix.
Although animal agriculture is widely understood to have a hugely detrimental impact on the planet, DiCaprio is not believed to follow a vegan diet, which has landed him in hot water with some activists who have criticized what they describe as his hypocrisy.
