Guinness Invests £16 Million In Plans To Ditch Plastic Packaging

Alcoholic drinks giant, Guinness, has invested £16 million (approximately $21 million) in its initiative to ditch plastic packaging from all its beer products.

Beverage company Diageo, who owns Guinness, plans to replace plastic shrink wrap and ring carriers with a 100 percent recyclable and biodegradable cardboard on its beer multipacks.

The company’s new packaging, which is expected to reduce its plastic use by over 400 tonnes annually, will hit the shelves in Ireland as early as August this year and will be carried out to international markets, including the UK, in 2020.

‘Important for the planet’

According to the Belfast Telegraph, Country Director of Diageo Ireland, Oliver Loomes, said: “Managing our environmental impact is important for the planet and the financial sustainability of our business.

“For 260 years Guinness has played a vital role in the communities around us… We already have one of the most sustainable breweries in the world at St James’s Gate and we are now leading the way in sustainable packaging. This is good news for the environment and for our brand.”

Vegan Guinness

Last year, the company announced all forms of Guinness – including draft, cans, and bottles – were suitable for vegans, after it had implemented a new filtration system that was veg-friendly.

Prior to this, Guinness used to be filtered with isinglass (fish swim bladders) and therefore wasn’t vegan-friendly.
