Grey’s Anatomy Ellen Pompeo has revealed that she’s adopted a plant-based diet – along with her whole family.

The change was inspired by Dr. Kristi Funk – author of Breasts: The Owner’s Manual. As founder of Beverly Hills Pink Lotus Breast Center, Dr. Funk has treated a number of high profile patients including Sheryl Crow and Angelina Jolie, and promotes a vegan diet as one way to help prevent breast cancer.

Pompeo told People magazine: “I just went for my yearly appointment a couple of weeks ago and [Dr. Kristi Funk] told me about her book. Since then my whole family has gone completely vegan.”

‘Super fun’

Pompeo says the shift to plant-based has been an easy one, and describes discovering new meals for her Chris Ivery, and three children, as ‘super fun’. According to the actor, the kids are adjusting well.

She added: “I don’t think it’s tricky at all – it’s actually easier because meat you have to cook it before it goes bad. Grains and lentils and rice and beans, everything’s in the pantry already. You just have to get vegetables, but vegetables stay good for a week – and I think we all feel better.”

Pompeo cited environmental reasons – as well as the health benefits – as a motivating factor in their new lifestyle, saying: “The message of veganism is not one that they want to get out but not only will it help us, it helps the planet.”
