A Cornwall creamery has been ordered to take action by the Environment Agency after locals complained of a ‘fishy’ smell.

According to residents living near Dairy Crest’s Davidstow creamery the smell is so bad it has kept them up at night and made them sick.

Now the Environment Agency has ordered the company to reduce the odour and noise pollution, with reports saying the agency is ‘extremely concerned’ with the issues.

‘Woken up by the stink’

“The worst thing is that we typically seem to get the smell in the middle of the night,” Andrew McKersie, part of an action group complaining about the odour, told media.

“We’re in bed and suddenly you are woken up by the stink, and then you can’t get back to sleep, so you can’t sleep properly.”

‘Working hard to improve’

A statement by Dairy Crest said the company is taking the issue ‘extremely seriously’ and is ‘working hard to deliver improvements for the local residents’.

“We are working closely with the Environment Agency to address the concerns that have been raised and recent improvements at the waste water treatment plant are already starting to make a real difference,” a spokesperson said.
