Animal protection organization Animal Aid is running a petition in a bid to stop horses from dying in races.

The petition, which currently has more than 76,000 signatures, is calling on the Government to create a new independent welfare body to protect racehorses from abuse and death, saying that 200 horses are dying every year under current body the British Horseracing Authority.

The group needs to create 100,000 signatures by August 13: petitions which reach 100,000 signatures are almost always debated – unless the issue has been recently debated by politicians or if there is already a debate scheduled for the near future.

Urgent

According to an Animal Aid spokesperson, the situation is urgent, and campaigners are very keen to see the issues debated by politicians.

The group says: “Around 200 horses die each year due to racing in Great Britain. Animal Aid believes that racing’s regulator, the British Horseracing Authority, is not fit for purpose, since it has failed to stop the tide of deaths.

“The campaign group is calling for an independent body to be established, which has racehorse welfare as its only interest, and which would take meaningful action to stop horses from dying.”
