Iconic musician Bryan Adams says wet markets should be closed and tells his 744,000 Instagram followers to ‘go vegan’.

The star recently shared an illustration from Steve Cutts, which states ‘here we see one of the deadliest plagues the world has ever seen. The other one is the coronavirus’.

‘Going on for decades’

“Let’s not forget this virus comes from an open wet market where animals and fish of all descriptions are sold together either dead or alive,” Adams wrote.

“This has been going on for decades and as a result, so have these viruses. #closewetmarkets. Here’s another brilliant one from Steve Cutts.  #covid_19 #govegan.”

Wet markets

The coronavirus (COVID 19) is believed to have started in a wet market in Wuhan, China, in December 2019. Since then, it has spread to countries around the world, killing more than 61,000 at the time of writing.

Animal-rights charity PETA has since created an online petition urging the World Health Organization (WHO) to shut down live-animal meat markets. It has nearly received 100,000 signatures.

The United Nations is also under pressure to ban wet markets around the world from animal protection agency Animal Equality – who has launched a new campaign and petition to calling for the immediate closure of wet markets.
