US Senator, Bernie Sanders, has slammed factory farming for its environmental impact to his 9.26 million Twitter followers.
‘A threat’
The politician, who ran for Presidency back in 2016, Tweeted: “Factory farms are responsible for 1.4 trillion pounds of animal waste in America.
“They are a threat to the water we drink and the air we breathe, and it is unbelievable to me that Republicans in Congress have been working overtime to exempt factory farms from environmental laws.”
Sanders’ tweet, which received more than 12,000 likes and 4,000 retweets, caught the attention of vegans, who reminded the politician that ‘avoiding meat and dairy is [the] ‘single biggest way’ to reduce your impact on Earth’.
‘Unsustainable cruelty’
However, Sanders did not mention veganism and later tweeted: “We must end a system where the top 10 percent of farmers get 77 percent of subsidies from the USDA. Our job is to help family farmers who are struggling. Not to make billion-dollar corporations even richer.”
Twitter user Darin Gates replied stating: “STOP giving them money for unsustainable cruelty! Let the farmers actually get back to farming and bring produce back to markets! Many alternatives to dairy and meat and EVERY one of them is better for our planet! Put taxpayer money where it will do more good. Stop bailing!”
