Animal activist Wayne Hsiung, former Northwestern law professor and co-founder of campaign group Direct Action Everywhere [DXE] has been arrested.
DXE operates across America holding vigils, exposing the conditions animals are kept in, and sharing information.
According to DXE, the activist was arrested after rescuing chickens during a vigil – where people bear witness to animals on their way to slaughter.
Hundreds gathered at the slaughterhouse to demand the release of the birds, who the activists say were victims of extreme animal cruelty documented with undercover cameras. Hsiung was arrested at the scene.
The slaughterhouse sit-in was followed a march to City Hall, where the nonviolent activists were blocked by heavily armed police officers and prevented from entering the building, which is accessible to the public.
Activists addressed the mayor and Board of Supervisors from the steps outside, with a demand for protections for animals in the city
“These birds have never known a moment of compassion or freedom,” Hsiung said during the rescue. “We’re asking San Francisco, as a city of animal lovers, to take immediate action to protect these animals from violence.”
A DXE spokesman said: “State and federal laws permit rampant cruelty against animals, often under the guise of humane treatment.
“Recent investigations by DxE of a Sprouts Farmers Market cage-free egg supplier and the farm that supplies the White House’s “free range” Thanksgiving turkey have found starvation, cannibalism, blindness, extreme mutilation, and genetic disorders on the most revered farms in the United States.
“[We] say these abuses are a direct result of systemic government inaction and are demanding that San Francisco recognize this suffering.”
DxE investigator and animal rescuer Hana Low added: “In today’s world, there is no rational way to defend torturing and killing animals for food.”
