Vegan actor Jessica Chastain has spoken out about awkward holiday meals with her Italian in-laws.
The 40-year-old Molly’s Game star, who married fashion executive Gian Luca Passi de Preposulo this year, opened up to talk show host Jimmy Kimmel about why she thinks her in-laws might ‘hate’ her.
Differences
Chastain highlighted that her husband’s family ‘speaks very little English’, saying: “It was a very quiet holiday, but there was a lot of pointing and a lot of food.”
She also pointed out cultural differences: “Americans eat in about an hour,” says Chastain.
“A meal starts and then it’s done. When I went to Italy, I didn’t realize that meals last for three or four hours… I don’t understand this, but Sunday brunch will go from 1 pm to 5 pm.”
‘They hate me’
Chastain explained: “In the beginning, I would say I’m vegan. Which is like the worst thing. I don’t eat 10 meals and I’m vegan.
“I would say, ‘I’m sorry I can’t eat that,’ and [my mother-in-law] would say, ‘No problem, we have fish’.”
“Do you think they hate you?” Kimmel asks, to which Chastain responds, “Maybe that’s why it’s so quiet. They just hate me.”
Schooling
The celeb has also schooled the Jimmy Kimmel Live host on veganism.
“It took me a long to figure out [that fish isn’t vegan],” Kimmel says.
“You feel like fish would be ok, but you don’t eat fish.”
“I don’t eat cheese,” Chastain starts saying, to which the host replies: “Oh wow, you really don’t eat anything.”
