The advocates – from animal rights network Direct Action Everywhere (DxE), were demonstrating outside Park Packing in Chicago. Activists stood on a public street in front of the slaughterhouse that read ‘Animal Liberation Now’ and ‘Animals Do Not Want To Die’ as the truck inched forward and allegedly made contact with activists’ bodies on a couple occasions.
DxE Organizer, Kelsey Atkinson, said: “When animals lives are on the line, we must put ourselves on the line to stand up for them. I am glad none of our activists were hurt today and hope it remains that way in the future. We are here for because we believe in nonviolence towards human and nonhuman animals.”
Activists with Direct Action Everywhere Chicago (DxE) block slaughterhouse trucks with their bodies to raise public awareness of the existence of these inhumane facilities within the city’s limits, and in hopes of convincing the slaughterhouse workers to surrender animals to them.
This was the organisation’s third truck blockade at this facility since January this year, and the first time using comforting song to send a message of compassion and peace to – and for – the animals.
DxE Chicago Organizer, Eva Hamer, said: “We’re singing to innocent victims who have never heard a gentle human voice- who have never experienced any fashion of kindness. We sing to mourn their excruciating existence and brutal end of life. We come in peace to show our humanity and appeal for nonviolence towards our fellow animals.”
DxE Chicago Organizer, Kelsey Atkinson, added: “It is our mission to shut down every slaughterhouse in our otherwise progressive city, which continues horrible atrocities against animals.”
A slaughterhouse representative has been approached for comment.
