Animal-rights activists have marched through the city of Paris to call for the complete closure of all slaughterhouses.

Organized by the group L214, it is reported the protest attracted between 3,000-4,000 people- who brought signs with messages such as ‘Murder King’ and ‘Behind each piece of meat is a sensitive being’.

Many of the demonstrators, who dressed in red, also participated in a ‘die-in’ – covering the area by lying on the ground.

It is also alleged that French police arrested a small group of activists for covering the statue of Marianne with fake blood.

‘Abolish the worst practices’

Hugo Bouxom of L214 told AFP: “We are here to say that it’s not because an individual is different from us that it has less value.”

Bouxom added: “Now is the time to legislate, to abolish the worst practices such as the raising of chickens in cages or the very long transport times of animals in boats, in lorries.”

‘Kindness, respect, and solidarity’

On Instagram, L214 said the demonstration was to achieve a world ‘based on kindness, respect, and solidarity’ – claiming that one day, slaughterhouses will no longer exist.
