April 10, Chicago, IL– At 4:30AM, activists belonging to the animal rights network, Direct Action Everywhere (DxE), blocked a slaughter truck carrying live easter lambs to Park Packing Co. in Chicago. “This is the dark side of Easter that no one wants to talk about – truckloads of baby lambs and piglets crammed into filthy trucks and being forced to watch their brothers and sisters get slaughtered while they anticipate their own deaths,” said DxE Chicago Organizer, Kelsey Atkinson.

Activists with Direct Action Everywhere Chicago have engaged in a series of these truck stops to raise public awareness of the existence of these slaughterhouses in Chicago and in hopes of convincing the slaughterhouse workers to surrender animals to them. This type of direct action was inspired by the Save Movement, a group that bears witness to farmed animals en route to slaughter and works to build a grassroots animal rights movement.

“We are making it our mission to shut down every other slaughterhouse in this city and inspire activists in other cities to do the same. How can a so called ‘progressive’ city continue to support this kind of horrible atrocity against animals within its city limits?”,” said DxE Chicago Organizer, Eva Hamer.

Direct Action Everywhere Chicago plans to continue these demonstrations for as long as slaughterhouses are still in existence in Chicago.

Direct Action Everywhere (DxE) is a network of animal rights activists working to challenge speciesism throughout society. They use creative protest to challenge the use of animals for food, clothing, experimentation, and entertainment. Visit Direct Action Everywhere onFacebook and athttp://directactioneverywhere.com/.
