The fast-food giant launched the sandwich in selected stores last week, for a month-long trial. Sales exceeded expectations, and it sold out in just four days. KFC says it will be back on the menu on July 2.
The Imposter Burger features a bespoke Quorn fillet, coated in the chain’s Original Recipe herbs and spices, lettuce, and vegan mayo in a soft-glazed bun. According to the fast-food giant, it is aimed at vegans and meat-eaters alike.
“We’ve been so excited to hear about this and play a part in KFC’s journey to reaching this game-changing new vegan range,” she said in a statement sent to PBN when the launch was announced.
“We’re confident it will be a huge hit with the skyrocketing numbers of vegans, vegetarians, and flexitarians around the UK. Clucking marvelous!”
Other vegans were not keen to get their hands on one, with many citing animal cruelty as a reason to boycott the chain.
“KFC murder millions of chickens every year. Just because they now have a vegan option, it doesn’t make the chain suddenly cruelty-free. If you buy the vegan burger, you are still paying to hurt chickens,” one social media user said.
“You’re still putting money into the coffers of company that makes its primary source of money off of the slaughter of a specific animal…this is just a marketing ploy,” another added.
Vegan taste test
But how does the taste of The Imposter actually stack up? PBN Founder Klaus Mitchell – accompanied by personal trainer Lauren Rose – went to a participating KFC in London to try the option – which is available as a salad and wrap as well as a burger.
“I’ll be honest, I thought it was going to be pretty sickly,” Mitchell says after taking a bite. “Obviously, it’s loaded with oil, and it’s going to be greasy, but it didn’t feel as unhealthy as I thought it would.”
