Virgin entrepreneur Richard Branson believes the world may be plant-based in the next three decades.

Although the billionaire isn’t vegan or vegetarian, he has previously spoken out about his choice to drop beef, citing environmental reasons.

‘Clean’ meat

He made the comments about being plant-based to news outlet Bloomberg, after investing in culture meat company Memphis Meats.

Branson was one of a number of investors who collectively pumped $17 million into the venture, which aims to create ‘slaughter-free’ meat, which is cultured from animal cells, for the mass market.

Some make take issue with his assertion that lab meat would end the need for animal slaughter, as it is currently made using cells from slaughtered animals, though there are scientists working to overcome this hurdle.

But Branson said he is ‘thrilled’ with his investment.

In an email to Bloomberg News, he wrote: “I’m thrilled to have invested in Memphis Meats.

“I believe that in 30 years or so we will no longer need to kill any animals, and that all meat will either be clean or plant-based, taste the same, and also be much healthier for everyone.”
