A vegan kebab company has scooped a prize at the prestigious British Kebab Awards.
The awards, which are held each year, were founded in 2013. They are sponsored by Just Eat and ‘seek to celebrate kebab restaurants across the UK’.
What the Pitta – which has two outlets in London, one in Brighton, and one in Croydon – picked up the prize for Best Takeaway in London.

London mayor
The vegan business won praise from London’s mayor Sadiq Khan, who tweeted about the awards, saying: “From doner to shish, kebabs have come to occupy a special place in British culture. At tonight’s Kebab Awards we celebrate the economic and cultural contribution of so many brilliant businesses, and how immigration has helped our city to flourish and thrive.”
He added: “Huge congratulations to What the Pitta. Winners of London’s best takeaway at tonight’s Kebab Awards.”
‘A huge statement’
Cem Yildiz, What The Pitta co-founder, told Plant Based News: “To win at the kebab awards is a huge statement for veganism and just how far it has come.
“We were laughed at when we decided to create London’s first exclusively vegan kebab shop just over three years ago and now we’ve taken centre stage with our vegan spin on the British classic kebab.
“We can’t thank our fans enough for the support and Plant Based News for helping us get the public votes in. This will be a great platform to shout out about our fifth location coming to central Manchester in May.”
