Vegan food specialist The Fry Family Food Company has launched in Costco stores throughout Australia.

Fry’s – which has been making plant-based meat alternatives for 27 years – created a special 15-pack of its Traditional Burgers for the store.

The pack will retail for a similar price to its beef-based counterpart, at $14.59 for 1.5kg.

Making plant-based food accessible

In a statement sent to Plant Based News, Fry’s International Marketing Director Tammy Fry said that the aim as a company is to make ‘plant-based food accessible to the masses’.

Fry said it’s key to make it easy for people to choose vegan alternatives, which includes making sure the products are affordable.

She added: “We’re thrilled to offer Costco customers the opportunity to feed the whole family with a healthy, more sustainable and cruelty-free burger at less than $1 per patty.”

Bringing new products to market

A Costco Australia spokesperson confirmed that the burger is the ‘first plant-based product in the freezer and chilled prepared foods’ section.

Adding that ‘veganism is the hottest food trend, especially in Australia’, the spokesperson said that the days of vegan diets being associated with ‘boring lentil curry or pasta with napoli sauce’ are gone, as the growth in vegan, vegetarian and flexitarian diets in Australia comes from increased awareness of food ethics, sustainability and health.

“Costco tries to always bring new products to market for our members that are on trend in health foods and organic options,” they said.

There are currently 10 Costco stores in Australia (1 in Queensland, South Australia and ACT; 3 in New South Wales; and 4 in Victoria) and the Fry’s Traditional Burgers are available in all of them in the frozen meals section.
