Vegan Expert Praises Prisons For Christmas Plant Based Menu

A vegan expert has commended the new Christmas menus for prison inmates across England – which include several plant-based offerings.

The festive dishes, which have been announced on, will be available at facilities in England, and will vary from prison to prison.

PETA Director Elisa Allen told PBN: “Offering vegan meals can help support prisoners’ rehabilitation and improve their health, while also saving taxpayers money.

“Some jails – including the William E. Donaldson Correctional Facility, the highest-security prison in Alabama, US – have found that giving inmates vegetarian or vegan meals can be a successful part of a violence-reduction programme.

“And of course, every plant-based meal served at a correctional facility – or elsewhere – helps spare animals a miserable life and painful death.”

At Her Majesty’s Prison [HMP] Littlehey near Huntington in Cambridgeshire, inmates will be able to tuck into a vegan nut roast, while at HMP Lincoln, prisoners can enjoy a vegan schnitzel served with roast potatoes, carrots, and sprouts.

Vegan prisoners won the right to animal-free products in jail in 2009, following a 15-year-campaign by the Vegan Prisoners Support Group [VPSG].

The right allows inmates to order ethical food and toiletries by mail order if there are none in the prison shop.
