A UK vegan dog food company has received The Queen’s Award for Enterprise for International Trade, acknowledging the company’s outstanding growth, after seeing recent rapid development of its export sales.

Benevo Vegan Pet Foods, the UK’s bestselling vegan dog food brand, was launched in 2005. According to the brand, it wanted to create ‘a cruelty-free dog food alternative, with a unique wheat-free recipe for more food sensitive dogs’.

While it started selling in the UK, Benevo’s export sales started outstripping those in the UK, with customers as far afield as California to Japan, and Norway to New Zealand, and significant customer bases in locations as diverse as South Africa, Hong Kong and Israel.

‘Mainstream’

Company Director, Darrell de Vries, said: “As veganism becomes more mainstream, people are starting to look for alternatives in all areas of their lives, including the options available for their [companion animals].

“We’ve pioneered in this area for 13 years and we continue to provide a solution to the ‘ethical dilemma’ of vegans who have to feed dogs and cats.

“This award reflects not just the growth of veganism in the UK, but worldwide and our efforts to lead that market with innovative products. So for us the Queen’s Award is another significant badge of honor to place next to our Vegan Society accreditation.”
