German-based fashion company Nuvi Nomad has launched a crowdfunding campaign in a bid to create vegan leather bags and accessories from leaves.
Branded as a ‘Project of Earth’, Nuvi Nomad’s innovation would see ‘sustainable, Fair Trade, and cruelty-free accessories made for the ethical fashion and yoga lover’.
The company uses teak leaves – that are handpicked from Chiang Mai’s forests – and turns them into a light-weight, durable, water and dirt resistant, anti-fungal, and naturally dyed alternative to leather.
Ethical fashion
The campaign was launched by German product designer Nina Rössler, who combined her two passions, design and yoga, to found Nuvi Nomad, which she describes as being a ‘one-woman show’ for the last three years.
Her designs are backed by her social and environmental beliefs, which will ultimately allow artisans to receive a fair wage and keep families and communities intact.
The PETA-approved brand is keen on making fast fashion a thing of the past by enabling an ethical fashion revolution through its vegan leather gear.
Accessories include a handbag, a shopper, a yoga mat bag and strap, and a women’s and men’s wallet.
The material
Although only 98 percent natural, the material is free of plastic and animal products.
Rössler told PBN that she is working on making the last 2 percent natural, saying “That is part of what Kickstarter proceeds are going towards.”
She also said working with the material is ‘highly satisfying’: “It’s smooth, and the texture is just naturally beautiful; we have many different colors, and every piece comes out a little unique and always wonderful.
“Its characteristics allows a diversity of uses, and I always find myself inspired to try something new.”
