Sainsbury’s might have been crowned Most Vegan-Friendly Supermarket but Tesco is doing everything it can to make this Christmas as easy to navigate for free-from diners as possible.

Research carried out by Tesco has revealed that millennials are prepped to cook three Christmas dinner options this year, with those of us confined to the kitchen having our yearly breakdown at 12.40pm.

And almost half of hosts are going to be cooking for a dietary requirement – be that vegan, gluten-free or nut allergies. 14 percent are set to cook a vegetarian option, four percent will be making a vegan dish to keep guests happy, and three percent will be dishing up something nut-free.

Vegan and other options

Because of all the different options being served up, 36 percent of chefs say they are nervous about cooking a meal that everyone can enjoy, while 35 percent admit they are overwhelmed by the number of options they have to cook.

As well as catering for family members with dietary requirements, other worries for one in three are ‘not getting the food ready at the same time’, followed by a fear of ‘burning some items’.

But help is at hand.

Tesco app

Tesco has launched a ‘Festive Menu Helper’ – an app full of free-from recipes, inspiration, and tips.

All of the lists on the app are shoppable, meaning that you can add the ingredients and dishes to your basket to be delivered to your door – or you can print off a pre-written shopping list to take to your nearest store.

No idea what wine goes with what food? The web app also offers a wine-pairing service – handy for the 83 percent of the population who don’t think about what wine goes with what food.

Menu planning

To start with, you create your guest list and choose whatever dietary requirements everyone has.

Then you have two options: create your own menu from scratch or ‘let Tesco do the hard work’ by pulling together a three-course menu for you.

It’ll suggest pre-made bits for some courses and easy-to-follow recipes for others. And if you don’t like the sound of something, you can just remove it. Each course has a couple of options, and in general, the app has six vegan mains, five starters, and seven puddings.

Vegan Christmas

“Christmas can be a stressful time and this research shows just how many different tastes festive home chefs across the nation are catering for,” Tesco Executive Chef, Martyn Lee, said in a statement sent to Plant Based News.

“With pre-prepared and scratch-made suggestions, our new festive menu creation service is designed to help people looking for inspiration on what to cook to keep all their guests happy, and hopefully help ‘designated chefs’ across the nation feel a little calmer come Christmas day.”
