Retail giant Tesco has launched a new free-from and vegan Margherita pizza.

The pizza – which was spotted in store then shared on social media – features a gluten and wheat-free base, topped with tomato sauce and coconut oil-based cheese.

It joins Tesco’s growing plant-based portfolio, which includes seitan steak by Vivera, a number of own-brand cheeses, yoghurts and milks, and the Wicked Kitchen range created by high profile chefs Derek and Chad Sarno.

‘OMG what?’

A photo of the pizza was shared in a private Facebook group – leading vegan Instagrammer Come Vegan With Me to share a picture with almost 10,000 followers.

The plant-based foodie captioned the image: “OMG WHAT! Just saw this in Has anyone tried one yet?! Apparently £3.50 in the chilled vegetarian section.”

The response was mixed, though a couple of commentators happy at the price point, which is lower than a number of other vegan options on the market, with one writing: “Yay at last somewhere offering a reasonably priced option.”
