A vegan organization will be holding its first vegan mac and cheese competition in South Carolina next month.

Vegan Outreach – which encourages people to try plant-based living – is hosting the Vegan Mac Down, which will take place in Columbia on September 10.

It follows hot on the heels of the group’s previous mac downs in New Mexico, Ohio, California, and Colorado.

Stacy Shepanek, South Carolina coordinator for Vegan Outreach, said: “Everyone loves mac and cheese, but most people have never tried a vegan version.

“I guarantee that many of these entries will be even better than their dairy-based counterparts – many people can’t even tell the difference!”

“Many people know about the impact meat and dairy has on our planet, our health, and on the animals, but they don’t realize how delicious and easy eating vegan can be, and we like to provide opportunities for people to experience it for themselves, so that’s why we’re hosting these mac downs.”

Chefs

There will be 10 chefs taking part in the event – not all of whom are vegan – including Good Life Cafe’s David Wrights and Lady Go-Go’s Yvette Garcia.

According to the organization’s Eventbrite page: “Vegan Outreach is proud to present Mac Down SC! Come sample and vote for the best vegan mac and cheese in the region!

“Enjoy a variety of recipes from some of the best regional chefs.

“They’ll be traveling from Savannah, Columbia, Charlotte and Charleston to serve up their best tasting Mac!”

The Mac Down will take place at midday on September 10, at 1620 Main Street. Tickets cost $8 in advance or $10 on the door.
