Tennis icon Serena Williams has revealed why she used vegan leather in her new collection for her fashion line.
The former World No. 1, who has won a massive 23 Grand Slam titles so far in her career, opened up about the inspiration behind her creative choices for the Serena Spring 2020 collection.
Vegan leather
Speaking to ESSENCE, Williams described the line as a ‘fashion passport’, inspired by some of her favorite places to travel.
“Ultimately, when I thought about it, [it] was Africa,” she said. “That’s where I got the giraffe print from.”
She then spoke about why she had chosen to use vegan leather in the collection, saying: “And then also the vegan leather because I feel like a lot of things are being killed and we’re not saving the earth. We can all just do one small thing and help out so that was also a lot of our inspiration.”
‘Inherent greatness’
The fashion line features a number of animal-free leather options including the Sasha Vegan Leather Blazer, and the Sasha Vegan Leather Pant.
According to the Serena site, the line is aimed at ‘celebrating and championing all women’, empowering its customers by encouraging them to use the hashtag BeSeenBeHeard.
The brand says: “Our goal is to amplify their inherent greatness with clothes that are unapologetic and beautiful – pieces that women feel confident in, that reflect their truest selves.”
