UK supermarket giant Sainsbury’s has added vegan pre-seasoned jackfruit to its growing plant-based offering.
Jackfruit, which is often used as a meat-alternative to pulled pork or crab meat, has become increasingly popular recently, with a major food poll predicting it would be a top trend in 2019.
The plain or tinned fruit requires some degree of preparation, the Upton’s Naturals line now available in Sainsbury’s, comes pre-prepared and seasoned, so it just needs heating. The flavors include Bar-B-Que, Thai Curry, and Original.

“Doing what we believe in is the best part of this business, and to us, success is creating 100 percent vegan products that can inspire meat-free meals,” Upton’s Naturals Founder Dan Staackmann told Vegan Food & Living.
“Unripe jackfruit is the source of an incredibly versatile and healthful meat alternative that is relatively foreign to the European market.
“We’ve made jackfruit easier to enjoy and more accessible to the everyday consumer, and the response from vegans and non-vegans alike has been amazing.”
