Calgary
rugby pro Nick Blevins – who adopted a plant-based diet in 2015 – has now launched
a dairy alternative brand with hopes ‘to change the world’ with fiancé and fellow rugby star Michele Helmeczi.
Beetroot
Nutrition
The pair’s dairy-free brand, Beetroot Nutrition, offers a series of vegan cheeses and
yogurts.
The cashew-based range, made with easy-to-pronounce ingredients, is tailored to provide ‘an
abundance of mental, physical, and creative energy’, according to the company
website.
Plant based
The 29-year-old,
six-foot-two, 225-pound Canadian athlete – described by a teammate as ‘one
of the toughest guys’ he knows – started eating plant based in 2015 to improve
his performance.
While he says
that at times it can be difficult to maintain his diet on the road, ‘he has found ways
to make it work’ – and, according to Blevins, his efforts have paid off.
‘Amazing’
The rugby pro said that he ‘felt amazing’ after changing his diet and that his recovery
time, performance, and endurance have all improved.
He added: “It’s
hard to explain how good you can feel until you start cutting things out of
your diet.
“I was
always achy and tired but now I’m 29, I honestly don’t feel 29.”
