The Queen has been gifted vegan food in honor of her 94th birthday on April 21.
Animal rights charity PETA has sent the Royal a vegan steak and kidney bean pie made by famous tinned pie company Fray Bentos.
It opted for the pie following reports from her former pilot that the Queen has previously eaten pies from the brand during flights.
COVID-19 and eating animals
PETA also notes that the current coronavirus pandemic has been linked to the consumption of animals.
It adds that other diseases have stemmed from capturing wild animals or farming animals for food, including swine flu, avian flu, SARS, HIV, foot-and-mouth disease, and mad cow disease among others.
This is another reason it has opted to send Her Majesty the animal-free offering – which features meat-free steak and kidney beans covered in a savory gravy inside a flaky pie crust.
‘Fit for a queen’
“There’s no question that Fray Bentos’ vegan steak and kidney bean pie is fit for a queen,” PETA Director of Vegan Corporate Projects, Dawn Carr, said.
“This is perfect lockdown food: it’s kind to the planet, there are no chopped-up animal parts, and it keeps for bloomin’ ages. Happy birthday, Your Majesty.”
