An online diabetes coaching program focusing on a plant-based whole foods diet has joined the American College of Lifestyle Medicine’s Corporate Roundtable.

The program – called Mastering Diabetes – was created by Cyrus Khambatta, PhD, and Robby Barbaro, who both have type 1 diabetes which they control using low-fat, plant-based whole food nutrition. The program involves an online course, a private online community, live video conferencing and personalized coaching.

As a result of joining the roundtable – a group of individuals and organizations ‘whose collective vision is sustainable human health, a sustainable healthcare system and a sustainable world’ – the program will be able to reach a larger global audience.

Program

Mastering Diabetes Co-Founder Cyrus Khambatta, PhD, said: “At Mastering Diabetes, our goal is to educate and empower millions of people living with all forms of diabetes around the world about the power of low-fat, plant-based, whole-food nutrition by reversing insulin resistance and maximizing insulin sensitivity.

“By partnering with the ACLM, we strive to reach more people and be a leader in the world of evidence-based diabetes nutrition.”

Plant-based

Speaking more specifically about what the program involves, Co-Founder Robby Barbaro told Plant Based News: “Low fat means a maximum of 15 percent of calories coming from fat or a maximum of total 30g of fat per day. Plant-based means nothing but plants.

“Whole food means not refined. So we teach people to eat whole fruit. We teach people to eat intact whole grains.

“We teach people to eat potatoes that are not processed and had oils added to them. We teach people to eat beans that are not laden with oil. Those are whole foods.”

‘Food-as-medicine’

ACLM President George Guthrie, MD, MPH, FACLM, added: “Mastering Diabetes provides coaching for those with both diabetes and pre-diabetes using an effective food-as-medicine approach.

“The program can be of great benefit for motivated patients and clinicians who desire personalized support for managing or reversing diabetes. We are pleased to welcome them into our Corporate Roundtable.”
