UK pie and sausage roll company Higgidy is to debut its first plant-based roll in time for Veganuary: the world’s biggest one-month vegan pledge

The plant-based product, named Miso Mushroom, will hit Waitrose stores on December 30, priced at £2.60 for a pack of six, and £1 at Boots for a twin-pack.

Supermarket chain Sainsbury’s will also welcome to rolls from 1 January, and Ocado from January 13.

The meat-free rolls are filled with pearly barley, spring onion, chestnut, porcini mushrooms, miso, and soy. They are wrapped in a vegan pastry and topped with a ‘crispy kale seaweed crumb’.

‘A real opportunity’

According to the Grocer, Higgidy MD Mark Campbell said: “Although vegan may not be new, we’ve seen a real opportunity to develop a premium vegan roll that avoids meat substitutes, putting veggies front and center.”

Higgidy will also introduce a new Vegan Aubergine & Spinach Masala Pie – priced at £3.90 – which will debut in Sainsbury’s and Waitrose for a limited-time.
