Pizza chain Papa John’s is launching vegan cheese as part of a new plant-based menu in the UK.

The new options follows a petition, which was set up by animal rights organization Animal Aid and website Vegan Food UK, which warned Papa John’s it risks losing ground to competitors as demand for vegan food skyrockets. A staggering 30,000 people signed the petition, urging the chain to join other major pizza outlets – including Pizza Hut, Zizzi, and Pizza Express – which have all added vegan cheese to their offerings.

Papa John’s menu will feature three cheesy vegan pizzas – topped with Bute Island cheese – as well as marmite scrolls. The pizzas include ‘Vegan Sheese and Tomato’, ‘Garden Party with Sheese’ and, ‘Hot Pepper Passion with Vegan Sheese’.

“Papa John’s is committed to delivering BETTER INGREDIENTS, BETTER PIZZA and we’re excited to expand our menu so those with plant-based diets or dietary restrictions can enjoy it too,” Liz Williams, Managing Director at Papa John’s, said.

“We worked closely with PETA who helped us develop the recipes and find the best vegan products, so we expect that the new additions will be a huge hit.”

“We applaud Papa John’s – the first national pizza-delivery chain in the UK to offer dairy-free cheese at all of its locations – for meeting the surging demand for vegan options and giving everyone the chance to enjoy the food they love,” added Dawn Carr, PETA Director of Vegan Corporate Projects. “This truly is a game changer.”

The new menu will be available nationwide from January 28.
