Food giant Nestlé is launching vegan KitKat chocolate bars, according to VeganFoodUK.
Vegan Food UK is an online organization sharing vegan food news, reviews, vlogs, and more. It operates across multiple social media platforms, with a Facebook group, Facebook page, YouTube channel, and Instagram account.
‘Vegan KitKats are coming’
It posted a picture of the chocolate – which clearly states ‘vegan’ on the packaging – as well as the ingredients list.
“OMG! This is HUGE NEWS. VEGAN KITKATS ARE COMING!” Vegan Food UK wrote on Instagram.
“We can’t say our source, but Vegan KitKats are coming to the UK market…”
Nestlé’s vegan products
Last year, Nestlé debuted vegan condensed milk in the UK.
The Swiss conglomerate says it has been developing the plant-based alternative to its classic Carnation condensed milk – which is commonly used in many recipes for desserts and confectionaries – for 18 months.
The product, which is made from oat and rice flour, first became available on Ocado’s website – and has since rolled out to Morrisons and Tesco.
Moreover, Nestlé’s marketing lead for Dairy Brands UK Vittoria Simms said: “It has been a challenge for vegans to find suitable alternatives to make dairy or caramel-based sweet treats or desserts, without having to compromise on taste, texture or appearance.”
Controversy
Despite its leadership taking part in Veganuary, Nestlé is a brand many vegans boycott due to its chequered history when it comes to various business practices.
These include a major scandal in the 1970s, when many boycotted the conglomerate due to its aggressive promotion of its formula milk over breastmilk to women in developing countries.
Following an internal investigation, Nestlé admitted that forced labor practices were taking place in its supply chain. It has also faced accusations of child labor, unethical water mining, and deforestation among others.
