Fast food giant McDonalds sold 150,000 of its much-publicized McVegan burgers in January.

The burger, which launched last year, is currently only available in Finland and Sweden. It was originally trialled in a single location in Finland in October before rolling out to every outlet in both countries a couple of months later.

The burger’s creators believe the high sales numbers reflect consumer desire to ‘eat more plant-based foods’.

The burger was created in collaboration with Orkla Foods.

Peter Ruzicka, CEO of Orkla Foods, told Foodnavigator that sales reflected the start of a ‘very, very exciting’ partnership with McDonald’s.

He added: “People want to eat more plant-based food, partly for health reasons, but also because of environmental reasons,” saying that the plant-based patty has a lesser climate impact than its meaty equivalent.
