Fast-food giant McDonald’s has expanded the trial of its plant-based burger to more than 50 stores in Canada.

The chain’s P.L.T sandwich, which features Beyond Meat’s plant-based patty, lettuce, and tomato, was originally available at 28 locations in Ontario.

On January 14, it will be rolled out to 52 restaurants across Southwestern Ontario for 12 weeks.

‘Guest demand’

According to Business Insider, Jeff Anderson, Culinary Innovation Manager at McDonald’s Canada said: “The initial test of the P.L.T. allowed us to learn more about guest demand and how to integrate this new menu item into restaurant kitchen operations while delivering the P.L.T. to our guests with the level of quality and ‘craveability’ they know and love from McDonald’s.

“As a test and learn company, the McDonald’s expansion of the P.L.T. into more restaurants in the Southwestern Ontario region will help us learn more about our guests’ tastes while continuing to provide variety within our menu.”

‘First-mover advantage’

Following the release of the P.L.T, experts have predicted McDonald’s could sell 250 million meat-free burgers annually – if its partnership with Beyond Meat is extended across the States.

Analysis of the trial, conducted by Swiss investment banking company UBS said the expansion could result in up to $325 million in sales for Beyond Meat.

“We believe Beyond Meat has a first-mover advantage – for now – but it appears a door remains open for McDonald’s to refine its P.L.T. offering before introducing a plant-based patty in the United States,” Analyst Steven Strycula said, according to Reuters. “Further, we do not know whether MCD plans to single-source or multi-source a U.S. menu item.”
