A Canadian vegan meat startup is set to open its first plant-based butcher shop in Canada just before Christmas.

Real Fake Meats, whose bricks and mortar store called Plant-Based Butcher will open in Halifax, Nova Scotia, was launched in May this year.

Its products – including vegan turkey, bacon, chicken, pepperoni, and cheese – could previously be ordered online for pick-up or local delivery. Now fans of the brand will be able to visit the shop itself to buy them.

Real Fake Meats was founded by Lauren Marshall – who previously taught plant-based cooking, ran the kitchen at the city’s enVie restaurant, and was a contestant on Canada’s Top Chef – and friend Brandon Levesque.

According to the pair: “Sometimes eating a plant-based diet requires more work and planning in the kitchen. We are here to take a bit of the pressure off.”

One of the ways they aim to make vegan eating easier, is by offering a range of seasonal ‘Holiday Boxes’ of food.

The Holiday Boxes are available to order online now and can be picked up from the Plant-based Butcher shop on December 23.

Options include the ‘Basic Holiday Box’ (CAD 50) featuring a veggie roast with roasted leek gravy, a pair of gluten-free boxes (CAD 80) featuring dishes like mock turkey cutlets and cranberry cashew mocha cheese cake, and the ‘Plant Lovas Charcuterie Tray’ (CAD 89) that will serve 10-14 people.

After the grand opening, Real Fake Meats plans to serve Plant-based Butcher customers five days a week.
