Linda McCartney’s Launches New Vegan Sausages Made From Pea Protein

Vegetarian brand Linda McCartney’s has launched a new kind of vegan-friendly sausage – made from pea protein.

The Vegetarian Lincolnshire Sausages, which are available from today from the freezer aisle in Tesco, are the first pea protein product from the veggie giant.

According to the brand, the gluten-free sausages have a sage and onion flavor.

Vegan boom

“With 2019 being tipped as the year that meat-free truly goes mainstream, there’s never been an easier time to reduce your meat consumption and stock up on delicious meat-free alternatives,” a spokesperson told Plant Based News.

Meat-free meals

The company’s assertion that 2019 is the year meat-free goes mainstream is backed by multiple market research reports, showing a surge in the number of people opting for vegetarian and vegan meals.

According to data from supermarket giant Sainsbury’s, a staggering 91 percent of Brits have adopted a flexitarian diet, leading to a 65 percent increase in sales of plant-based products year-on-year.

A recent white paper from YouGov gave a more moderate statistic. The paper, titled Is the future of food flexitarian?, describes Flexitarians as being ‘somewhere in the middle’ consuming meat occasionally, but eating a mainly plant-based diet. It says 14 percent of Brits identify as eating this diet.

Vegan and vegetarian market

A report released by market research company Mintel at the end of 2018 suggested that ‘as 56 percent of UK adults ate vegetarian/meat-free foods in the six months to July 2018, a significant increase from the 50 percent who had eaten these foods in the six months to March 2017’.

“The appeal of meat-free products also extends far beyond the still very limited pool of vegan consumers,” Alyson Parkes, Research Analyst at Mintel, said.

“The rising profile of meat-free products and plant-based diets has been helped by activity in the foodservice arena and a significant advertising push in 2018, which has increased the visibility and awareness of these products among consumers, as well as injected excitement into the category.”

The sausages have an RRP of £2.00.
