LemonShark Poké is trialing a vegan tuna in all three of its California stores, in the hope to release the product nationwide.

The plant-based tuna, created by Ocean Hugger Foods, is already stocked at Whole Foods stores across the US.

Ahimi, an alternative to ahi tuna, is made primarily out of tomatoes and is seasoned with soy sauce, sugar, and sesame oil.

‘We knew it was time’

LemonShark Poké president and co-founder Tobi Miller said: “When looking at our menu and where 2019 would take us, we knew it was time to offer an option for all of our LemonShark fans, which range from herbivores to vegetarians and vegans.

“We’re thrilled to have found the perfect plant-based tuna with Ahimi and look forward to seeing how it is received in our three test stores with the hope of introducing it to all of our restaurants across the country.”

‘Overfishing is destroying our oceans’

Ocean Hugger Foods’ plant-based alternatives are said to expand, with a carrot-based alternative to salmon already being developed.

Their website reads: “Overfishing is destroying our oceans, and if we want to keep tuna from going extinct, we have to reduce the number we catch. Ahimi is a sustainable, plant-based alternative to tuna.”
